A PHENOMENON BASED LEARNING APPROACH

The Phenomenon Based Learning Approach is a commitment to our parents and students, to make our learning transparent. Taught exclusively through English, but with supporting material in Spanish through TICMAS Education, the school aims to offer a project to each child every four to six weeks. At the end of the learning cycle, we will invite parents to the school to either an assembly, a learning walk, a presentation, or another learning type of event to take part in the evaluation exercise for each student. We are focused on a qualitative feedback process, in which parents and students have a say in describing the learning experience and setting goals for the next project. All projects focus on the four major soft skills of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. All projects are transdisciplinary in nature and subjects are preselected for each project. All subjects will require Art and English to be fundamental elements to describe students learning journey. The process of learning must be personal and reflective for our students, our parents, and our teachers.

Curriculum

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The school follows four official academic programs, but the curriculum design is unique and uses several key academic platforms to give students rich and holistic academic development. Our English program comes from Macmillan English and students in Kinder study Doodle Town and students in Primary study Global Stage English. In KI, KII, KIII, and Grade 1, our students use Ludiletres to reinforce reading and writing development. Both Kinder and Primary use EMAT Mathematics to develop Mathematic Thinking skills and students from KIII to Grade 6 Primary use Progrentis to develop digital literacy skills and digital capabilities. We are proud to be the first school in Mexico to use the TICMAS platform to support our Phenomenon Based Learning Approach.

KINDERGARDEN

The Kindergarden section of Colegio Ikigai is where our children will start their journey to discover their Ikigai. We have three large, modern and fully equipped classrooms, with a maximum number of children of 15 per class. Our focus in Kinder is on personalised attention, at all levels, based on using collaborative learning spaces and a unique Ikigai methodology, that places a high emphasis on creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Our children will learn three languages English, Spanish and French, with the majority of the day in English. Our children will take part in regular collaborative projects, which will demonstrate their natural curiosity about the world and be a showcase for the learning objectives from our five Kindergarden programmes, Doodle Town English, Ludiletres, EMAT Mathematics, SEAL social and emotional learning, and Oak Academy Science. The aim of the Kinder experience is to offer an academically stimulating and challenging environment delivered to the children with energy, interaction, and love. Colegio Ikigai Kinder, is a rich and emmersive experience, which will set our children on a successful path to Primary.

Primary

The Primary section of Colegio Ikigai is where our children will continue their journey to discover their Ikigai. We have six large, modern, and fully equipped classes, with a maximum number of children of 15 per class. We also have a library for them to use. Our focus in Primary is to create independent learners, who can be reflective on their learning and to offer personalised spaces in which our children can both obtain excellent academic outcomes, but also investigate the world, through our Phenomenon Based Learning projects approach. We continue the focus from Kindergarden on developing creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills, which can help our Primary children develop a holistic and well-rounded set of abilities and competencies, in preparation for the Secondary school experience. Our students will continue to learn English through Global Stage English from Macmillan, they will continue to develop their Mathematic thinking skills through EMAT, they will continue to learn science through English from Oak Academy and they will start working with the Progrentis platform. The social and emotional learning programme is based be the UK SEAL program and Ludiletras will continue for the academic year 2022-23 in Grade 1.

SOCIAL PROGRAM

In order to complete our mission and help students to find their Ikigai, we consider that our social program is a vital component of the school calendar. Our activities will be varied, from donating cleaning material to public schools and to creating art installations for the peace, yet essential to creating in our students a social consciousness, which can help students transcend stereotypes about the potential power of any future Mexico.

Every child is special and unique

IKIGAI DAYS

The Ikigai Days are four special days in the year in which we can support the emotional well-being of our students. We aim to have a special day for all our students, in which we can promote the story of each student and celebrate them as unique and important people in the world. Each Wednesday of each month we will have letter day. This is a day in which we encourage all our parents to write a special letter to their child, to be shared at school. Once a year, for each student, we will have a day in which we invite their grandparents to know the school and take part in our daily activties. The final activity is mini-olympics to help promote sport, teamwork and healthy lifestyle in school.
